Learn from English teacher - If it's possible you should try to learn from as many different teachers as possible, but at the very least find one English teacher and learn what you can from that person How to learn languages when you are a hard-working person In contrast to the four tasks that I assign to the hard-working learner and those were, of course, to be much more goal-oriented, more deliberate. You know, set weekly goals and stick to them. Don’t miss a day in your language learning; whereas, the lazy guy can go for a couple of days and not do it. Write – I’m too lazy to write. I’m working on my Italian, my Portuguese and my Russian, having fun with it, listening, enjoying, I don’t write. If I wrote I would do a lot better. I’m too lazy to write, but for the hard-working person – write. Then I say connect with a tutor, because a tutor will get you working harder. Even once a week, twice a week, via Skype, nowadays you can do it. You don’t have to get in a car and go anywhere or take a bus. So for the hard-working person, get yourself a tutor. And for the hard-working person, review your words and phrases, whether it be in flashcards or off lists. I don’t do it that often, because I’m a lazy learner. I prefer to listen. So that was my advice. If a criticism must be made it is that largely its focus is on speaking skills. Again this is good but some students need to learn other skills for business or university. They need to learn writing and reading and if they do not practice these skills their reading and writing levels will remain low. Some schools promote the use of the Direct method. This is good at lower levels but students at higher levels find learning through repetition, boring and not as useful. They are also less fluent at higher levels because they have depended on rote learning and cannot communicate efficiently enough. Some schools do not use course books or any syllabus. This is not good for anyone - not for the student or the teacher! Without a book there is no course! Both students and teachers do not have a structure! Students are learning blind and do not understand that grammar and vocabulary needs to be repeated in reading, in exercise, in writing in speaking, in everything! This is necessary for retention. Learning a language is a mental process, similar to changing your way of thinking. It is not like learning to fix a car or make a cake. A long time ago I worked for a school in Italy. My boss spoke 5 languages and I remember her telling me "A language is a mentality. If you can speak more than one language you can think in more than one way". I have never forgotten her words.
